In his early 30s Francois Coty befriended Rene Lalique, Leon Chiris, and Jacques Minot. He travelled to Grasse where he was introduced to the magic of natural and aldehyde essential oils. A curious student, Francois absorbed as much as he could about the perfumery business and spent most of his time in the laboratory, educating his nose while learning the intricate steps necessary to express the fragrances he conjured up in his mind.

Legend famously tells of Francois walking door to door trying to get stores to introduce his fragrance to the women of Paris, and after being rejected for the umpteenth time, smashed a bottle of "la Rose Jacqueminot". Official lore has it that it was Francois's short temper that finally did the trick. Gossip has it that it was actually a great marketing ploy, for customers rushed to get their hands on the creamy rose perfume that filled the stores ground floor.

In 1925, an estimated 36 million women across the world were using Coty powers to dust their faces and the company returned an enormous 60% profit.

Coty's empire spread across Europe and decades later South Africa where it enjoys a fair portion of the fragrance market.
